This doesn't seem to work for establishing ODBC connections for the instant client. Still checking if I need to set up a tnsnames. Such a way to install things.
Congrats Oracle!! Add a comment. I had to create a "tnsnames. Put it in same folder as the client. This worked for me when I got "You have no Oracle clients installed" and "You do not have any Oracle homes installed" after installing TOAD and pointing it to the instant client zip.
The directions state: Download the appropriate Instant Client packages for your platform. Unzip the packages into a single directory such as "instantclient". Set the library loading path in your environment to the directory in Step 2 "instantclient". Start your application and enjoy. Then in Step 3, open a Windows Command Prompt. Instead, it can be unzipped and used without any fuss. In many cases I now use SQLcl instead of the instant client.
Before considering the instant client, you should ask yourself if SQLcl would be more appropriate. Since September the instant client RPMs have been freely available on yum. If you are using Oracle Linux and have root access you can install the instant client using Yum with a few simple commands.
